Now that the Christmas holidays (which were great) are behind us, we're scrambling not only to get ready for the trip, but also to do all we need to do to prepare for being away from our home and office for six weeks--closing the books for 2007 and mailing out our 2008 book catalogs, for example. We have lists, lists, lists. A friend will be covering our publishing office for us and feeding our cat and chickens while we're gone. Sidney is working overtime, doubling up on schoolwork this week and next so that he won't be behind his class when he returns, in addition to researching New Zealand for a pre-trip presentation to his class next week. Just before the holidays, we discovered that Sidney was outgrowing his hiking boots, so we ordered several pair to arrive after Christmas (we live too far from anywhere to just go out and shop), and today he made his choice. I think we're pretty much set for gear now, but maybe I'm jinxing us by saying so.

And here is where you come in. Since this is our first time doing a blog, we're sending this entry to you to make sure it actually works. When you get it, if you would let us know by return email, we'd appreciate it. And bear with us on the photos--we're not taking a cell phone with us and uploading photos straight from our camera at an internet cafe may not be possible. And if you DON'T want to be on the list, be sure to let us know. We won't be offended.

bon voyage!
We will be with you in spirit as we finish getting ready to travel and you are already there! We wish for you - tramping days that are just long enough, not tooooo long, and dry feet afterwards! Actually, although wet feet were one of my big worries before our first trip, that wasn't a frequent problem. Enjoy all the yummy avocados - it should be the cheap plentiful season for them. My favorite NZ sandwich - cheese avocado and marmite - Yummmmmm. And maybe we will meet up in Papatowai? Cathy and Ron
