Our trip is coming up fast! Christmas is looming on the horizon, but most of our lists are of things we need to do before we leave for New Zealand, or things we need to remember to take. We're sealing tent seams, breaking in hiking boots, and double checking the first aid kit. We've done more than one shake-down backpacking trip here at home in the North Carolina Smokies to make sure we have the right gear, and our tent campsite reservations for the tramps were made months ago. It's raining hard here at the moment--something we'll need to get used to in New Zealand.
Sidney is already doubling up to get ahead on school assignments so he won't be behind when he returns--he won't be carrying textbooks in his backpack! For me, this blog is a completely new experience--stay tuned!

News from Sidney- I'm actually a little afraid about the trip- what if I get homesick, or can't finish a hike. I'm trying to shake that off- on the Grand Canyon, I didn't have problems, but it's tough. However, on this trip I'll be able to communicate with "home" regularly- will that be better or worse for homesickness? I just hope that I'll be able to concentrate on the best parts of the trip.
