First day of skiing

The ski area we visited was called Val di Fassa. We bought a pass that covered the whole area, which was huge. Bigger than anywhere we've ever skied before. So there were plenty of different areas to explore. The elevation of Canazei is 1400 m (4700 feet) and in April there is no snow on the ground at the base, nor at the runs leading to the base. We had to go much higher to get to the snow. So the first thing we did in the morning was walk 5 minutes down the road to the nearest lift and take the cable car up the mountain with a 500 m (1600 feet) elevation gain. It was pretty steep! In fact many of the lifts we took up were enclosed because they were so steep
We skied hard on the first day. The skiing was intermediate level, and having not skied for a couple of years now, some places were a tad more challenging than I would have liked, but I managed! The runs were steep, long and the snow was heavy. The kids - mainly Alex - were usually far ahead of us. Lars was nice enough to stop and wait for me, the slowest and most careful skier. The views were just amazing. It was really hard to concentrate on what I was doing when there was such beauty all around. The conversation with myself in my head went something like this "Gosh, that's so beautiful.... whoaaah slow down!.... Oh, so beautiful..... Agggh - pay attention, you almost fell..... Wow my muscles are really burning....."
We followed a tour around the "Sella", a big rock formation sort of in the center of it all. It took all day and we covered 42 km (26 miles), 25 km (15 miles) of which were actual skiing (the rest was riding lifts).
Our hotel had a nice spa in which we enjoyed each afternoon before dinner. There was a big bubble pool (won't call it a hot tub because it wasn't that hot), swimming pool, and different kinds of steam baths and sauna. The steam rooms were fragranced with essential oils, smelling either like eucalyptus or lavender. It was nice going from one to the other, and after an hour or more of that you just felt fully steamed, boiled, baked and 100% relaxed.
My dinner choice tonight was risotto with asparagus and salmon.
