An Evening In Bangkok
Film at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand

Ellen and I saw an announcement in the Bangkok Post about a Japanese Film shot in Thailand that looked really interesting. Children of the Dark was being screened by and at the FCCT. This new film had been scheduled in the Bangkok Film Festival. It was censored and withdrawn, and this was the first screening of the film in Thailand. The Japanese director and a few of the Thai principal actors were on hand for a discussion afterwards. We watched the Thai Language version which was sub-titled in English.

The FCCT has been in existence more than 30 years. It is located in the Penthouse of the Maneeya Building in Bangkok. Many of the foreign news bureaus are in the same building. There is a resaturant and bar (we had a delicious fried fish dinner) and there was an interesting and overflowing crowd.

The subject of the film was tough to watch. Based on a novel, the story follows a journalist researching and writing a story about an 8 year old Japanese boy from a wealthy family, who needs a heart transplant. The operation is scheduled in Bangkok for a time certain with children who work in the sex industry in Thailand as potential donors. The child "donor' will obviously be killed for the donation. The journalist's goal of writing what he sees conflicts with that of an NGO worker who wants to stop the donation and save the child donor's life.

The film was shot in just 29 days on a low budget. The young child actors were not actors. Like the now famous kids in "Slumdog Millionaire" they were chosen from a group of disadvantaged youth. If you have a chance to see Children of the Dark, do so. It is extremely well done and is thought provoking. It's subject contains matters we would rather not see. Someone needs to witness such things if they are indeed based on fact.

It was an extraordinary evening!
