Hola!

Complete change of scenery. We left Parismina on Wednesday for La Fortuna, a town next to the active Arenal Volcano.

It was the most epic journey yet on Costa Rica's public transport. Had to cover 200km as the crow flies [a vol d'oiseau]. It took us approx 10 hours on 1 boat and 3 buses! Had to go back to San jose before heading to La Fortuna. It was all made that much more complicated by the Semana Santa as loads of Ticos were also travelling around the country that day and buses were ridiculously full. We managed to escape being seriously scammed [arnaquer] in San Jose, where locals wanted to charge us $100 to get to La Fortuna, when in the end we did it for $5!

Anyway, moved away from the tropical humid Carribean Coast to a more mountainy. wet and colder part of the country, home of volcanoes and cloud forests. We stayed in a hostel run by a local who had named himself Mr Lava Lava (think Mr Lover Lover!), who guaranteed that we would get to see lava flowing down from the volcano & feel the heat! sounded brilliant, though slightly dangerous and therefore booked up immediately!

Then met a nice couple from Oregon in the States, who had their own ride (voiture). They offered to take us with them to La Catarata Waterfall [chute d'eau]. The waterfalls were buried in the cloud forest. Had to trek down this steep path [un sentier raide] to get there, but the waterfall was pretty impressive. Audrey braved the freezing water [s'est aventuree ds l'eau gelee] and went for a swim in the waterfall pool, which was pretty cool!

Mr Lava Lava then took us to a free natural hotspring river (riviere d eau chaude) (temps up to 48 deg C) where we relaxed with all the Ticos visiting La Fortuna. The river and its temperature were pretty amazing. It was incredibly hot & current strong [courant fort]. Managed to lose one of my flips flops [tong] in the current and could only watch it get dragged away in the distance... left me barefoot for the rest of the day and at the mercy of local snakes...

Next stop with Mr Lava Lava was... the lava [la lave] of course... night had fallen, so we approached the volcano... however, don't picture us at the edge [au bord] of the volcano braving a potential eruption, feeling the heat of the lava flowing past us... In the end, we were several kilometers away observing occasional orange dots in the distance between the black clouds! It would have been quite an anticlimax, had it not been for Mr Lava Lava's incredible excitement & enthusiasm at the sight of each and every lava dot. He also managed to keep us entertained with many stories about venimous snakes (a few were on exhibition in the hostel, incl. the boa constrictor and coral snake!... a little scary).

Finished the day watching the Costa Rica football champions (Saprossa) wapping [eclater] the Mexican Champions 3 - 0, much to Mr Lava Lava's excitement again. but then beat him at chess [echec] which calmed him down.

In the end we never got to get a clear view [vue claire] of the Volcano due to the clouds. Its pretty rare to get that opportunity in any case. But Mr Lava Lava made it a very cool place to visit!

Next stop, Monteverde / Santa Elena to see the cloud forest.

Pura Vida!

Love,

Audrey & Nick
