The school's PTA puts on a couple of huge events.  Festival of Nations (FON) is an example of one of them.  I had heard that it was a huge deal at the school and it was a treat.  I had no idea what to expect.  The Festival starts at 5:00.  I am dressed in my American outfit, a washington nationals t-shirt and jeans.   The festival starts with a dinner reception, there are tables set up with specialties from different nations.  I liked to think of it as around the world with carbs.  All the food was excellent, I ate way too much.  PHOTO_ID_R=3_fon.jpg

Next, we have to prepare for the Parade of flags.  There are 27 different nations represented as SIS.  Each student comes up to the stage with their country. Many students have dual citizenship, they had to choose what country to represented.  As the students came to the stage, their national anthem played. My favorite song was Japan's, it sounded like a rock song..   A fellow teacher talked about their flag.  I am asking the teacher for his notes and I will email to you.  The information was so wonderful.  I love the learning.  My task is to make sure that the students get off the stage in a timely manner.  There was only one student who needed to be carried off.  A little three year old boy got scared on the stage with all the people and froze.  I enjoyed watching all my students in their national dress.  Everyone looked so beautiful and was proud of their nations.   It warmed my heart.  It is always great to see the different sides of the students.

The third part of the program is the dance portion.  I took video and pictures of all the performances.  I can not do it justice with a description.  Just enjoy the videos.  When I was watching the dancing numbers, I started to realize how lucky I was to see this.  How this is exactly what I wanted.  I started to feel the happy tears well up in my eyes.   I do complain about Surabaya and some days I am very homesick.  But, I am so grateful for this experience and feel like this was exactly what I needed and wanted.  I am seeing such a different part of the world and life.  I truly feel like my life is becoming richer.  :)

The finale of the program was the kids singing together.  The song was  cover the world with love and that was when I realized I was getting old.  Because I was so proud of those little guys that the tears welled up again and I cried my little eyes out.  I guess I am my father's child.

Miss you all!  See you at Christmas!
