Where I stayed
Billy Franken Ranch
I was supposed to ride Dash today, but my back is not allowing it. I had Lynn Rigney work on my hips and back. If only I could stop doing the heavy work. Anyway, Bart has been real restless and we decided to go to the North Platte County Fairgrounds and let the horses run around in the arena. A few people had been staying there during the rest days, getting repairs done on their vehicles. The cost of repairs was so low. Jacob's trailer had to go to the trailer shop. He had driven to Colorado and picked up his mom's horse and brought back 50 bales of hay. Just before he got to Lake Maloney, he lost a tire and didn't know it. I do believe that it has been a long time since he had the bearings packed or even checked. Glad that no one got hurt on the freeway.
One of the crew drivers came to the lake and picked up and delivered his horses to the Ranch. Unfortunately, the young driver didn't pay attention to the low hanging branches and a branch caught the hay rack on top of the trailer and ripped it to shreds.
While we were at the fairgrounds, we decided to take advantage and bathe the horses, went grocery shopping and other errands. Then we went to the next campsite. It is a private ranch w/a stockyard that hasn't been used in a long time. The older rancher has Parkinsons and he was hoping that he would still be alive when we arrived. Dave said that he wasn't looking too good last month when he drove thru checking the route and campsites for our ride. Dave and a few of the riders have driven thru about 3 times in the last year, making sure all was good to go and overnite stops were still okay and permits in place. It is a really nice grassy area that he mowed for us. The water was turned off, but we all haul our own water for this purpose.
The Aussie, Charlie, was riding and his horse stepped on an aluminum can and the horse got scared and bucked him off. When we went to the meeting that night, he wasn't looking too good.
Annie decided to celebrate brithdays that week, and brought out two cakes and ice cream for Lisa, Gary and Dwight her son. The two cakes were devoured qucikly.
Until tomorrow!
