Wednesday July 7th 2010

After a hot and rainy night, we had to leave the Guesthouse in Chiang Khong at 8.30am. First, we drove to the Mekong and then crossed it with all our luggage on speed boats. There we spend a long time sorting out visa's and buying what was needed for the day on the boat. When we finally got on the slow boat, it was already so full that our luggage had to be left on the Deck. We were lucky it wasn't high season when about 120 people get crowded on these boats, we were only about 80. So there was plenty of space on the narrow, wooden benches. We soon discovered that the floor was actually the better option. All the being uncompfortable, however, was forgotten when looking around and taking in the unique scenery along both sides of the river. The next 7 hours were spent chatting, reading, looking, sleeping ... time passed quicker than expected. It also turned out that we were lucky because with our luggage being stored on Deck meant we were off the boat first and therefore managed to find a lovely Guesthouse with view over the Mekong, the next hours we spend making the most of that view and having a nice chat with the other guests who had all been on the boat with us. Clare went to bed early that night, so I stayed out with some other people and later watched the dreadful game between Germany and Spain. The first regret of this holiday, it definately wasn't worth staying up until 3.30am!!! On my return to the hotel, I also found myself locked out but luckily Clare had set herself an alarm to let me in... the mosquito's would have eaten me alive!
