Where I stayed
Shanghai Hotel

Ipoh is dull. It's a big city with little charm and it's saving grace is how lovely and friendly the people here are. The drive here from Tanah Rata (the bus cost around £2) gave us fantastic scenic views, down from the hills and then past limestone peaks, but that was probably my favourite thing about our visit to Ipoh.

We only stayed for one night, enticed by the promise of good food. The Hor Fun noodles were tasty but not worth the hassle to be honest, we made sure to pick the place which seemed most popular with the locals and even shelled out a pretty penny for our meal (£1.80 each!) but the next day we just got up and left as soon as possible. Shanghai Hotel was an OK place to spend the night, the bed was the most comfortable we've slept on yet, we paid around £9 between us for a double room with air conditioning and even an attached bathroom. The owner was helpful and drew us a map to the bus station the next day, we walked around for around 45 minutes looking at the line drawing map he made us before we gave up and went back to the guesthouse to order a taxi (we tried flagging down about six and they all ignored us, though it was a public holiday so we suspect they were all busy rather than being rude). He laughed at us not being able to follow his directions, but when the taxi (which cost around £2) drove us to the bus station it was bloody miles away and his map made absolutely no sense!!

Pretty boring entry, sorry!
