Weather : Sunny...yay!
Vilanculos is a small sprawling village about 4 hours drive north of Tofo. We had come here to visit the Bazaruto Archipelago, a number of islands which are renowned for their white sandy beaches, turquoise clear waters and underwater coral reefs. It was just such a pity that our nice Nikon DSLR camera decided to stop working when we had come to visit some of the nicest beaches in Africa. This has caused us no end of frustration and concern….the camera is less than a year old. Fingers crossed we can get it repaired in Johannesburg in a week or so
We found a backpackers hostel which also allows camping and we set up our tents under a huge baobab tree. The weather for the first couple of days was disappointingly cold and windy and by lunchtime the skies had clouded over completely leaving everybody scurrying indoors to put on more clothing.
By the third day we were all getting thoroughly peeved at the weather when out of the blue the clouds cleared mid morning leaving absolutely glorious sunshine which then allowed the temperatures to soar to a more acceptable 26 degrees or so. At last…this was what we came here for!
By midday the tide was on its' way out, and as the waters receded many long, winding sandbanks were left high and dry . We waded out through the shallow water to each sand bank until we reached an enormous one several hundred yards wide and probably a mile in length. The water all around these sandbanks was crystal clear. We stood on the remote sandbank we could reach, far away from shore, surrounded only by sand and sea as far as the eye could see, feeling wonderfully isolated away from the hustle and bustle of the world ashore, on our perfect little island paradise….it was simply gorgeous
The night skies here are wonderful. We have been in many fantastic star gazing locations around the world, some reputed to be some of the best places on the planet with world famous observatories located there. However, luck had it that there were cloudy skies when we were in Tibet and the Himalayas, New Zealand and South America and thus there was no star gazing for us. Fortunately the skies in Mozambique have been wonderfully clear allowing for fantastic views of the stars and the Milky Way Galaxy. We couldn’t resist in the evenings wandering down to the beach to take photos of the skies.
We were also lucky a few days ago to have a full moon rise over the Indian Ocean which was simply spectacular. The moon seems enormous over here….huge and golden…and as it slowly climbs above the horizon into the night sky the entire ocean seems to shimmer with its’ golden reflection. It is just beautiful!
So we will leave you with some piccies of Vilanculos, the beaches, the beautiful sea and the incredible night skies.
