DOMINIQUE HERE:

Day : 214
Temperature : 22 degrees
Weather : Rainy for two solid days!!

One of the big dilemas we had when coming to Mozambique was whether to take a 4x4 or not. We dithered about making a decision and finally decided that an ordinary car would do. BIG mistake. Yes, the roads all the way to Tofo were perfectly fine, however we couldn't find accommodation in Tofo and we are staying down a dirt track road in Barra 8 km away. We'd already been bellied in the sand in the pitch black and thankfully managed to get ourselves out ok. But now, with two solid days of torrential rain, the bright red coloured dirt road has literally turned to mush and we are stranded!!

We did managed to slither our way down to a 4 star hotel where we ate some breakfast and lunch. But unfortunately the road had significantly deteriorated during the day. We went for a walk along the beach and came across two young South African girls on horseback that had been abandoned by their guide and were absolutely terrified as they didn't know how to ride. They were absolutely beside themselves, in tears in the pouring rain and we felt obliged to help. We grabbed their horses and helped them dismount then I jumped on one of the horses and with the other horse in tow I took both horses back to the stables. Unfortunately this took significant time when the rain was at its worst. And so by the time I returned to the hotel, absolutely drenched, our car was well and truly stuck.

However, I do have to mention how beautiful the beach was this afternoon when the sun was shining from one angle onto the turquoise seas with HUGE, black thunderhead clouds. It was incredibly beautiful, with pounding waves, golden sands, gorgeous water and the dark, dark clouds in the background. It only lasted 10 minutes before the rain drenched everything, but this brief moment made up for all the horrible weather over the past few days.

Fortunately the hotel which we had been at for lunch had a 4x4, and they kindly took us back to our hotel, but the rain continued all night. The roads this morning were in an unbelievable state, but thankfully the sun was shining. We made our way back down to the hotel to get our belongings from the car and grab some breakfast. We spent the day at another hotel, by the swimming pool in the sun waiting for the road to dry out. We are now just about to get into the car and try to get back up the dirt road to our hotel and all being well we will head off tomorrow, further north to Vilanculos. Wish us luck on the roads!!!
