Where I stayed
Day : 397
Temperature : 26 degrees
Weather : Dazzling sunshine all day long
We've decided that we prefer Copacabana to Ipanema, despite the fact that Ipanema is supposed to me more upmarket. The beach appears wider and longer on Copa, the sand doesn't seem to slope so much making it easier for loungin on, and their are views of Sugar Loaf Mountain which there aren't on Ipanema. The action seems to be the same on both beaches with football and volleyball games going on all the time so there is always something to watch.
And so this is where we have spent the last couple of days, chilling out on the beach, drinking Caipirinhas and people watching
Two days ago we decided to go to watch a Brazilian football game...Botafogo v Flamengo, two rival teams in Rio. We booked with a tour company called "Be a local" but I must mention that the "tour" was basically just transport and tickets and the guides provided no information whatsoever, in fact they were rather apathetic about the whole thing, and the drivers of the minibus drove far too fast for our liking. We got the distinct impression that they just wanted to get us to the game and then back again with minimum effort on their part. In addition, the tour cost R 90, but the match tickets cost only R 30, which means we each spent R 60 each for the luxury of getting minibus transport to and from the stadium. It's likely that a group of four people could definitely go indepenendently and for a far cheaper price. Just get a taxi to the stadium, for probably no more than R 60 and buy the tickets at the gate...easy! Saving probably 1/3 of the price of the tour ticket....which means more money for caipirinhas later!
As for the game itself, it was definitely worth going to see. Although the stadium was not at full capacity the crowd were going insane and the noise was incredible. Streamers were flying, horns were blaring, flags were waving, the locals were chanting and shouting and cheering and booing and swearing......insane! If we'd been staying longer we'd go back to see another game for sure. It's a must do experience!
We have two days left in Rio and fingers crossed the weather is good. The only thing left on my to do list now is to buy some Havianas.....
