DOMINIQUE HERE:

Day : 272
Weather : Sunny mornings, torrential afternoon downpours
Temperature : 29 degrees

Apparently, Colombia is the number one country in the world to have the largest variety of bird species above everywhere else. Being fans of our feathered friends, and with biologist in tow, we headed to the village of Minca, about 600m altitude in the mountains, and half an hour away from Santa Marta.

We arrived in the middle of the afternoon after a bumpy ride in a taxi which wound it's way up the pot hole ridden roads. It was aboslutely chucking it down, and with no hope of wandering around to find a hostel we ended up in a cute little cafe drinking tea, eating chocolate brownie (you can see food is becoming a frequent topic of conversation in my blogs these days...oh how I long for a tub of Haagen Daz, Pralines and Cream would be top of the list) and playing with six extremely cute kittens of about 2 weeks of age...and sorry Eileen, I failed to get any photos to add to the "Cats Around the World Collection", since the photographer was too busy doing a Homer Simpson impression as he stuffed the chocolate brownie down.

The next day was spent going for a wander around the town, following a walking path around the mountains so that we did a loop and ended back in town several hours later. It's astonishing just how much wildlife there is here. Many, many species of birds and butterflies, including parrots, hummingbirds and even toucans. In the afternoon we visited a nearby hotel where there are bird feeders containing a sugary syrup for the hummingbirds....such exquisite little creatures they are. Fortunately, the birds seemed oblivious to the torrential rain and we spent hours watching them zip past us to the feeders where they would flap their wings at incredible speed as they hovered with pin point precision, sipping the sweet nectar from the dishes.

In the evenings we found a great little resaurant called E I Mox Muaca which served delicious savoury and sweet crepes...see..I'm back onto food again! But I really ought to mention this place which is a must. Not only is the food delicious but the lady who ownes the tiny restaurant, which only has two tables, is absolutely lovely. It's definitely money well spent.

And so after two nights spent at Minca we headed back down to Santa Marta and found ourselves a cheap hostel for the night. The room was hot and stuffy, the pillows were useless and the mattresses were so old that it would have been more comfortable sleeping on the floor. In fact it was so hot and uncomfortable that in the middle of the night I walked into the shower with my clothes on, drenching myself completely and lay back down on the bed under the fan. Sometimes extreme measures are required!

Today we are off to San Andres, a tiny little Caribbean island near Nicaragua. It's been pouring with rain here all day and the skies are permanently grey....let's hope for a little Caribbean sunshine up there.

Hee guys,

Last Wednesday I had a look at your blog, becaurse I remembered that you planned to come home at the 31th of May. But I couldn't find any stories about you travelling back home. Today I saw you extended your journey for another three months. That means you still enjoy it, and you've got some money left!!! Great job you did. I still love to read you're stories.

Keep enjoying!
