Weather : Sunny with Rainy Showers
A very short blog today. We went to the Charles Darwin Centre to visit Solitary George and the giant tortoises. After yet another start at 5.30am for the sunrise we once again wandered to the fish market before heading to see the reptiles. Solitary George, or Lonesome George is so called because he is the last of kind in the world. Fishermen tradgically hunted the Pinta Island Tortoise to what they thought was extinction, until Lonesome George was found in 1972. The 100 year old tortoise was brought to Santa Cruz island and to the Charles Darwin station where he lives today. He is the rarest animal on earth, and is a symbol of the catastrophic impact that human beings are having on the planet.
