DOMINIQUE HERE:

Day : 200
Temperature : 22 degrees
Weather : Cloudy morning, sunny afternoon

We arrived at Porpoise Bay in the Catlins yesterday afternoon after successfully completing everything on our "to do list" which comprised of the following.
1.       Fill up on fuel
2.       Fill up on water
3.       Stock up on food
4.       Get some money out of the ATM
5.       Book some accommodation over Christmas
6.       Confirm that we can keep Harold for an extra three days

We then sat on the most glorious beach watching some dolphins and went for a dip in the freezing cold waters….lasted about 30 seconds in the water! We went for a walk along an incredibly busy beach….I mean, how dare there be two other people and their dog on it! We sat on some grass overlooking the rocks and crashing waves until the sun went down. What a hard day.

As for today…..before I give you a brief recap, I must give you a warning….it may make you sick. Read on only at your own risk!

Today we got up early. I had my first ever surfing lesson and actually managed to stand up on the first attempt….bonus! During the lesson a pod of endangered Hectors Dolphins circled us and rode the waves with us for the entire hour….just metres away! Amazing! Afterwards Kev and I went for a stroll along the beach and stumbled across a sea lion basking in the sunshine…..as you do.  We sat quietly a few metres away and took some photos as it obligingly rolled around and flicked sand over itself. We had lunch and then went to Curio Bay, a rocky bay five minutes away. This was to see the most endangered penguins in the world. We sat frozen still as two yellow eyed penguins waddled past us. We then returned to our beach for an ice cream. We sat on the hill in the sunshine overlooking the bay, eating the aforementioned ice cream just as a pod of dolphins started splashing around in the bay and jumping completely out of the water metres off the shore. Can it get any better than this??

Awe man...I was hoping nobody would notice that I'd superimposed us into the pictures!!
Tony - thanks, dates corrected.....although I think I wouldn't notice if Christmas had happened out here...there are still barely any decorations up anywhere!

Looks great. I remember when I was in Oz and went to "9 mile beach" and of course the reason it was named this was because it was nine miles long, golden sands and just brilliant.

Good to see you are enjoyingh travel round NZ.
