Today we traveled the dreaded Cassiar Highway that we have been talking about since Destruction Bay. I don't know how a road could be any worse than the Top of the World, but this one was warned to be in the same category...BAD! In fact, all of us were given the option of foregoing the trip to Iskut, Stewart, BC, and Hyder, AK because of the anticipated poor road conditions. Those who chose to detour from our scheduled route were to meet back with the group in Prince George, BC on September 3.
Two of our companian RVs decided not to continue on. Roy and Brinda will meet us in Prince George, but Wayne and Barbara Burnett are leaving us for good. They have had some issues with their leveling jacks and have an appointment at the factory in the lower 48 to have them replaced
The Cassiar Highway was, indeed, as rough as promised. Art drove very slowly, as did most everyone else.
Thank goodness the views were enough to make the trip to Iskut worthwhile. Our campground was also worth the trip with a beautiful view on all sides. We had our first group campfire and roasted marshmallows. It was a beautiful evening. The days are getting shorter and it gets dark nearly at the time we are accustomed to.
A couple of people in our group were awake last night in Watson Lake and got to see the Northern Lights. They were uncertain about whether they should come knocking on doors in the middle of the night to let the rest of us know about the sky show, and they ultimately chose not to. All of us wish they had and hoped that we might catch a glimpse of the Lights this evening. I stayed awake and checked the northern sky, but, no such luck!
