Tuesday, August 25, 2009 - Skagway, AK

About 160 miles southeast of Destruction Bay, we leave the Alaska Highway and take the South Klondike Highway through British Columbia to Skagway, Alaska.  We have now traveled the entire Alaska Highway!  Again, the scenery didn't disappoint us as we traveled to Skagway.

The Alaska town of Skagway is a quiet winter resting spot for about 800 year-round locals and an energetic tourist hot spot all summer long. Evidence of Gold Rush history fills this town and the town's main street is lined with false-front buildings that make it look like the old west.

As one gazes down main street, what appears to be a huge modern building is actually one of the three of four cruise ships docked in town.

The town caters to cruise ship passengers and thus has shop after shop, with the majority selling jewelry.  Art and I went into one of the jewelry stores and I asked to see a $196,000 canary diamond ring.  The special price - just for ME - just for THAT DAY - was $27,000.  I asked how much the ring would be if I paid cash and the saleslady nearly drooled on the counter.  After "checking with her boss" it was determined that I could take the bauble with me for a mere $22,000.  I told the eager clerk that I would think about it, but had a hard time getting out the store as she did everything but cling to my ankles to pursuade me to stay.

I think we looked in almost every store.  It was lots of fun for me, but I think Art was about to commit hara-kiri.
