Where I stayed
Riverview RV Park
This morning we headed to town to find a place where Art could get a haircut plus we spent some time browsing a few stores.
Our bus showed up at 1:30 to take us to the El Dorado Gold Mine. While boarding the bus we passed out fudge that Art and I had made - accompanied by "The Candy Man" on the iPod. (The music teacher coming out in me.) Before we could get out of the RV Park or even finish the fudge, the bus stalled and wouldn't restart. Everyone had to get off the bus - accompanied by "Walkin'" and wait for a different bus to arrive - accompanied by "Standing on the Corner." After about 30 minutes, the replacement bus arrived and we were on our way - accompanied by "On the Road Again." A song for every occasion.
At El Dorado Gold Mine, we rode a replica of the Tanana Valley Railroad through the original gold fields of interior Alaska
Further up the tracks, the train stopped again and everyone got off for a demonstration of how gold is recovered using modern day techniques.. We were shown how to work a sluice box - the slanting box that miners use to shovel dirt into and then wash with water. The riffles on the bottom catch the gold concentrate. Each of us were given a poke filled with pay dirt fresh from El Dorado's sluice box, and with our newly acquired skills we panned for riches. Well, not really - Art and I totaled a whopping $7.50 in gold particles. Some of the other couples got as much as $50 worth.
After getting back on the bus, we stopped for a short time at a section of the Alaska Pipeline.
We have two free days in Fairbanks coming up. Tomorrow we have an appointment to get the oil changed and the air filter replaced in the rig, so I guess it will be early to bed tonight - accompanied by "???" (blogger suggestions accepted, please.)
