Wednesday, July 15 - Whitehorse, YT

Our travels today took us from Watson Lake to Whitehorse, YT.

We left the Downtown RV Park around 7:30 a.m.

On the side of the road, there were hundreds of messages spelled out in rocks.  The rock messages were started about 9 years ago by a local swim team.

We stopped at the Rancheria Falls Recreation Site where there was a gravel and boardwalk trail through the forest which lead to the picturesque falls.  The mosquitos were hungry and I'm so happy that I brought my head-to-toe bug suit.

We came through the Cassiar Mountains and over the Continental Divide.

It seems that everyone's main objective today is to find cinnamon buns.  John and Margaret Lester, from Tampa, FL, who have been to Alaska before, have tempted us with the tales of these delicacies for days and our saliva is making the Alaska Highway slippery!  Our first cinnamon bun trial was at the Continental Divide Lodge.  These were pretty good with lots of gooey, sugary cinnamon between the rolled layers of dough.  The second one that we tried was the "world-famous" Johnson's Crossing bun.  In my opinion, it wasn't as good as the other.

We stopped at the Nisutlin Bay Bridge, the longest water span on the Alaska Highway, to take pictures and in the town of Teslin, the Yukon Wildlife Gallery.  The displays of Northern species were phenomenal!

Much of this area is critical habitat for migrating waterfowl in spring.  The bird-watching must be spectacular as Northern pintail, canvasback, American wigeon, goldeneye, merganser, kestrels and bald eagles fly in.

We will spend four nights in Whitehorse with much to experience, including a city tour. We will have our first exposure to the vaudeville of the Yukon at the Frantic Follies. We will visit the beautifully restored, historic SS Klondike II Sternwheeler, the Beringi Interpretive Centre, and the Transportation and Old Log Church Museums.

Hey Kathy,

Thanks for all the updates. I read and look at all the pictures. I had lunch with LEE V. She is definitely not as aware. It was so sad to see and watch. Did you get my pixs from our trip out West? Keep sending the pictures. I tell everyone about this.

Cheryl
