Not the greatest of starts to the day, it has to be said.
We set the alarm for 6am, and needed to be on the road by 7am.   This in itself is not a problem, but the marital woes of our neighbour get us awake most of the night.   As it turns out, she took him back.  Silly girl.
Thanks to Noah’s efforts we pretty much get on the road on time.  I am so tired (and when I say tired, I mean grumpy).  We hit traffic almost immediately.  And the weather is not how it is supposed to be in California.  This is not the best .
And then, as if by magic, the traffic clears and so does my mood.  Hurrah.  We stop at Jack in the Box, for milk, pancakes, coffee and a grilled sandwich and we are served by the most wonderful lady.  She must have been 80, and to be honest, not much taller than Elwood.  She was so chatty, helpful and enthusiastic it was impossible to do anything but smile in her company.  Elwood told her about going to Mickey’s House and told her about Brother Bear.  She slipped us some extra pancakes and that’s it – the day is looking up.
We’re on our way to Disneyland, LA.  This is a massive, massive treat.  A fabulous leaving present from my 'Breast Friends'.  Thank you to Michaela, Tracey, Liz, Sally, Ana, Anne, Jenny, Sue, and Amanda for this exciting day. We can see the signs to Disneyland.  The excitement is mounting.  We park up in the Toy Story parking lot, in the Woody section – I consider this is a sign that today is going to be brilliant.  Elwood has either ideas.  He decides that he does not want to leave the car.  We explain that yes, the Woody car park is good but we think Disneyland is going to be even better.  He is 3 years old, and apparently knows better.  Next, he agrees to get out of the car (just so he can see the shuttle buses!?, but refuses to get dressed.  He wasn’t to wear the clothes he wore yesterday, and also slept in.  The outfit is head to toe red and he has decided it is his super hero outfit.  It’s not an option, he smells weird.  Eventually, he gives in and we have a similar battle over shoes.  Noah and I cannot believe this, we are at Disneyland, this is not supposed to be happening. Elwood 3 year old tantrum is only surpassed by my own tantrum.  Noah is the only sensible person in our family.  He chats to Elwood, and then has a word with me, the cloud lifts – and then we are back in business. We get to Disneyland entrance, get Elwood a push chair, and it is impossible not to be insanely happy.  But there is something else that happens when you walk into Disneyland, we want chocolate and soft drink, and heck, we just want to spend money.  I think they hypnotise you as you walk through.  Even as am writing this, I am getting that weird feeling where I just want to buy stuff.  Scary.
So, our first stop is Toon Town, (which require a stroll through Fantasyland en route).  Super,  super cool.  And the first thing we do is queue up to see Mickey Mouse.  The queue takes about 20 minutes and Elwood can barely contain himself he is so excited.  When it is his turn he runs over to Mickey and starts chatting.  Mickey listens enthusiastically to Elwood chat about Pluto, about where Mickey sleeps, the photos on the wall, and where Pluto might be.  Mickey is the strong silent type so responds with a series of the enthusiastic gestures.  Elwood also asks Mickey if he knows brother bear and shows him the makeshift totem pole he is carrying.  Mickey looks well impressed.
We have a sticky beak around Minnie, Goofy, and Donald’s houses.  I am pleased to report they all keep a tidy home but have a somewhat lackadaisical approach to security.
Next stop is Tomorrowland, where we consider  going on Buzz Lightyears Astro blasters but are put off by the longest queue I have ever seen.  Instead we browse at Toy Story merchandise in the shops.   Elwood is a happy boy and is oblivious to the fact he has missed the ride.
Now Elwood has decided he wants to see Woody and Brother Bear characters.  So we head over to California Adventure Park.  (There are 2 parks right next door to each other, they overlap massively, and it is kind of confusing.)  So we arrive there to see the see the character Elwood is so excited about, and Elwood is asleep.  So Noah and I wander around Paradise Pier, a bug’s land, and the Golden State and eat our body weight in chocolate.  We are disappointed to  learn that the Brother Bear characters no longer work at either park, and their attraction has been ‘re-themed ‘ and is now  the characters from ‘Up’.  This is bad.  The little fella is going to be gutted.  (Later when we tell him he bursts into tears, and then when he receives imaginary mail from the bears saying how much they love and miss him – I feel really sad for Elwood.
Noah and I are unsure what to do with our sleeping child and Disney so we entertain ourselves by taking funny photos or each other and get Elwoods photo taken with characters, even though he is asleep.  We are on a sugar high and think this is hilarious.  So, Elwood has his photo taken with Mickey, Lightening McQueen and Mater, and is none the wiser.    We buy some more chocolate to keep on the sugar high.
When Elwood wakes up he wants to see Toy Story Character, so off we go in search of them.  We find Jessie, which is good but not the best Toy Story character.  As we approach the front of the line, Jessie has to go, and Buzz appears.  This is the holy grail of Toy Story characters.  The atmosphere is electric.  When it is Elwood’s turn, Elwood starts chatting to him about super hero stuff really seriously.  Buzz wants to pose,  but Elwood is deep in conversation.  In the end, I join Buzz and Elwood and we pose together happily.  I don’t know if it is all the chocolate or the proximity to such a buff Buzz, but I display more enthusiasm than I expected to.
We are on a high from our Buzz experience so we go off looking for Woody.  Rather inconveniently, he is in the other park, in Critter Country.  Grrrrrr.  So we head back to the other park and we find Woody.  We get there and Elwood is a bit overwhelmed and does not want to pose with Woody.  So I make Noah.  Ha!
Elwoods need a run around so we make our way to Adventureland land (via New Orleans, of course).  On the way we realise Elwood has lost a tiger, so we go back to Critter Country and I spot Elwood’s tiger.  Jessie from Toy Story is running around like a lunatic with it.  So Noah runs round after her, and her ‘companion’ and Noah calls out ‘That’s my son’s tiger’.  Noah reclaims the tiger for our son and we bathe in the warm glow of victory.
We head back to Tarzan country and the fellas run around and I try and get some colour on my shoulders.  I am sensing a sugar crash is imminent.
Now that must have been just what Elwood needed, and he suddenly gets the hang of Disneyland and wants to go on a ride.  (He has been disinterested in the rides all day.  All his has wanted to do is stalk characters).  So we go on the the tea cup ride (at last!) and the alice in wonderland ride.   We are all lovin’ it, lovin’ it, loven’ it.  (And apparently, not quite over our  sugar rush)
We then go back to Toon Town and go on Roger Rabbit’s Toon Town Spin which Woody loved, and then we legged it to Main Street U.S.A to watch the parade.  Elwood loved this and was chuffed to see Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto – but the best bit was the Lion King.    He was in awe.
We got Elwood a hot dog on a stick and then legged it back to the other park to watch the World of Colour Show.  We have some time to kill so we go on the Little Mermaid Ride.  Elwood loves it.   The world of colour show  is quite amazing – it is Light images from Disney movies projected onto water.  It is quite amazing.
We then get a bus back to the car, and head back to our hotel which is just around the corner.   We all fall asleep almost instantly.   A great day at the happiest place on earth indeed.  But it sure does take it out of you.  Thank you again 'Breast Friends'.
