With our friends, John & Kath (aka the Doctors) we headed for a river "lodge" called Uncle Tan's. Here we are using the word lodge very loosely. It's pretty wild out there in the Bornean Jungle - and clearly Uncle Tan (bless his soul) wasn't that big on hygiene & cleanliness. We were very (very) smelly after 3 days of not showering and enduring toilets that would make Chuck Norris flinch.

But ablutions aside, it was great going for jungle walks and sunset & night river boat cruises to see the things that go bump (as well as brrr, squelsh, ssss, and kwaaak) in the night. We got to see all sort of birds we hadn't seen before (white-eared Kingfisher, grey headed Fish Eagle etc) and plenty of new creepy crawlies. There was also one particular Orang Utan which we now concur is probably a cardboard cut-out since he was in the same tree 2 days in a row - hmmm...

Rob spotted a rare bird, that caused the guide great palpitations of gushy happiness - and now we can't remember what it was... oh well.

Heading back to relative civilisation, and smelling much better, we went to see the famous & wonderful Seppilok Orang Utan Sanctuary. We saw about 5 Orang Utans come to the feeding platform and interact with each other and the "ranger". We were blown away by how "human" their mannerisms are - even more so than the vervets & baboons we are used to watching in SA.

We splashed out a bit and stayed at an "Inn" (yes, there was space) which had television ... only to see the scrolling red bar on CNN about a coup that was happening in Thailand. And that's exactly where our flight ticket took us the next day...
