After Kuching I took a flight to Sibu (1/2 hour vs. 5 on a boat but only $5 more). The plane was called a Fokker-50. Ha! So Sibu means "swan" kind of like Kuching means "cat," but Sibu is a rough bird. The town was full of riverboat types, if anyone knows what that means. It was just kind of rough and tough, like maybe Bornean bouncers all come from Sibu. However, the gayest KFC in the world is there. I wanted some mashed potatoes so I went in there and got served by like 5 different ladyboys. I stayed at the River Park Hotel, which was fine and about 5 seconds from the docks, good for my 5:45 AM boat to Belaga. At dinner I ate at the restaurant directly below the hotel, which had some good Hainanese chicken rice (white rice with roasted chicken, cucumber salad, and chili garlic sauce). This information is not for you, friends and family, but for anyone who might be looking here for travel info.

I got up at 4 AM to get the boat to Belaga, which I was lucky went all the way so I didn't have to stop and spend the night in Kapit on the way. Or maybe that was unlucky. I came here to see the Gawai festival, which apparently only the Iban celebrate, and there are tons of Iban in Kapit, but I went waaaay upriver to Belaga to where there are only Kenyah and Kayans, who don't give a shit about Gawai.

Anyway, I didn't get a seat on the boat and it was packed, so I sat on some boxes all cramped up FOR NINE HOURS all the way to Belaga. I also didn't bring any food, so I ate peanuts and Mentos for breakfast and lunch. I was pumped. The boat's TV played some ridiculous movie with Gary Busey in the first 5 minutes that revolved around a psycho gingerbread man trying to kill all of the employees of a bakery. Then there was some karaoke DVD but with no mic so none of us could sing along. Finally we got to watch WWE Judgement Day, and I was pretty embarrassed to be the one person on board from the country that shit comes from. I think I am going to write my PhD thesis on the homoness of WWE.
