Welllllllll
this might be the weirdest place ever
We got on a bus from Punta del diablo and got the 45 minute ride up to this border town...
The lonely planet describes it as "if you are not going to or from brazil and you find yourself here, you are seriously lost buddy"
I couldnt describe it better myself... hence, stealing it. with reference at least!
You get off the bus and walk to the main road.... one side is Avenue Uruguay and one side is Avenue Brazil. And you are literally standing between the two countries if you stand on the roundabout!
One side sells things in pesos
One side sells them in Realis
One side is cheap (brazil)
One side is expensive (Uruguay)
We went wandering off to find the bus terminal (omnibous terminale if anyone is wondering) and we get to a massive concrete slab of a mosquito den and buy our tickets. but now in pesos again. so strange. then the ticket lady mentions we need to get stamped out of uruguay. baaaaaccck we go to uruguay (the whole 5 minutes) and then we walk for 3 kms (she said it was one) down the main highway and walk to a big what looks like a trucking station and get our passports stamped by some dude. then went to the ladies and my legs got mosquito raped by about 50 bites in abourt 5 seconds but whose complaining
then baaacccckkk to uruguay for some bbq lunch and then ovvver to brazil for some gelato... we had 8 hours to kill in this weird town. then went to the supermarket and the guy tries to convince me i have to leave my backpack there. with my whole life in it. errr. no sir. then we go to another supermarket and we ask if we have to leave our bags there... oh wait, now they speak portuguese!!!
unbelieveable. just when i become a spanish master and everything.
so we wandered and walked and duty free observed for 8 hours before finally going back to previously mentioned concrete slab. our bus evenutally arrived at 11pm and off to brazil.. but 3kms later we went through another passport place, this time entry into brazil stamp time... lordy.
a very weird, long, waiting game filled day people... however, we can only cheer, as that morning we woke up in florianopolis, brazil!!
amazing!
we love it here already.
