Flag of Costa Rica  ,

So we left San Juan (Sniff, Sniff) for the lovely lush gardens of Costa Rica. We took a chicken bus to the next biggest town where we then bought a ticket for Costa Rica.  We arrived about 12ish and bought a ticked for the 2pm bus (Tica Bus).  So we sit and wait around for about an hour and a half then the bus pulls up.  We are with about 6 people all heading to San Jose.  Everyone gets on except for us, our bags get tossed off, then they tell us that the other people had a reservation.  Man frickin reservations, so the lady from Tica Bus takes our tickets, gives us our money back and walks down the street to the competitor.  Pretty peeved at this point, we buy another ticket that is double the price, shiza!, and then we were on our way.  We get to the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border at about 4pm and then leave around 6pm.  This border crossing is really bad, dusty, dirty and lots of transports then the border people want to do a random bag check so everyone hauls their shit out from under the bus puts it on a table, the border guys feels up the bag doesn ´t really open it and then lets you go.  So we are past the border now trucking along.  We wanted to get off in a place called Monteverde , but, the bus which travels the Panamerican Hwy doesn ´t go here.  Our ticket was to San Jose and all the ticket agents at the bus terminals are certain that the buses go thought Monteverde (our actual desination), but they don´t.  We got off the bus (really had no say in this location...) at the side of the road infront of this steel yard pretty much in the middle of no where and then tried hitchhiking, but nobody trusted us whiteys all that much and would swerve as far away from us as possible.  Eventually we got a cab (luckily it was 9pm) and stayed the night in a town close to Monteverde .  Next morning we took a 17km bus ride that took 1.5 hrs up this steep windy dirt road and we got to our destination.

Monteverde was pretty awesome, this green lush town in the middle of 2 cloud forests , butt-loads of stuff to do and you can drink the tap water.   We got out of our bus and were bombarded by these hostel/hotel vultures, they approach you 3 or 4 at a time and start yelling that their hostel is better and yada yada yada ....horseshit.  We stood around looking in our book and looking at their flyers that they hand you, about 20min later we decide to find our own and the hostel/hotel vultures are like ¨Well if you are not going to stay in our hostel can we have our flyers back¨, piss off you fricking harass us for 20 min with crap and then you want your flyer back, man what a bunch of douchebags . So we find this really nice place to stay for  16 bucks per night it had its own bathroom, free internet and free breakfast (We are all about the FREE).  We get in, get some info and then do our first activity.

We decided to do another zipline like in Tikal .  We had a lot of fun on the first one and this one in Monteverde (Extremo Zip-line) had what was called a Tarzan Swing.  You are attached to a rope at the top of the platform all harnessed in and then are pushed off the platform.  There is about 3 seconds of free fall and then the rope gets tight and you swing out about 20 meters, really far.  I took a video of Sarah but it is missing the part where she is first pushed off the platform and the ´Holy Fu´ so all you hear is ´ck´ and then screaming.  The ziplines were better than Tikal too, the views of the valley and cloud forests were really nice and you are on 3 out of 11 that are 750 meters long.  Second day we went to Santa Elena cloud forest to see this frickin´Quetzal bird.  This bird is a real big deal here, Guate has currency named after it, it is the national bird of Guate and there are a lot of photos of it all down in Central America.  We didn ´t see one, not all bad though because we saw about 6 spider monkeys eating and swinging around in trees.   Next day was not very exciting we sat around ate a bunch of fried chicken and planned our Patagonia trip in January (this was also a cost saving strategy).  The following day we did a night walk, which was pretty neat.  At first I was skeptical cause they show you some raccoon type animals (like there aren ´t enough of those in Canada), frogs and some ants, yippee.  But then they show you this orange knee tarantula and a really poisonous snake and some bug with a huge horn on the top of its head, so at the end of the tour it was alright.  Sarah said she saw a couple of trouser snakes, but I didn´t see them...

Next day we headed off for La Fortuna and Volcan Arenal .  We took this plan called the Jeep-Boat-Jeep, they drive you to the lake in the area about 1.75hrs then you take a ferry and then they have another vehicle on the other side to take you to town.  Pretty cheap only 15 bucks and it saves you about 3 hrs  (regular bus).  We  got to La Fortuna and that day we went to see Volcan   Arenal .  This volcano is really active, I think like the 2nd most active in the world.  We hiked to a look out point and didn ´t see anything, really really foggy and then to a second location to get a better view of the lava.  Unfortunately it was really foggy so we didn ´t see anything.  But, we did go to a really sweet hotspring (Baldi ) afterwards.  This hotspring is heated by the volcano, some of the water is really nice 35 deg. Celsius and the hottest is 68 deg Celsius the place has 11 different pools, cascading shower rock waterfall, 2 water slides and numerous swim up bars.  This place was heaven - really nice, really relaxing and not too bad for the price considering what is all contained in the hotspring .  The following day we went to the Arenal waterfalls at La Fortuna , feeling pretty cheap we walked 6km up the hill and then down the 400 stairs to the fall, this saved us about 20 bucks each.  The falls are really beautiful, very high and pristine.  Running out of time we left for San Jose and then to Panama City the next day.  Costa Rica is really nice, lush, has clean drinking water and developed but, by far the priciest place we have been in Central America.  We are going to go back to Costa Rica for Christmas to the Nicoya Peninsula in Malpais for a few days.

Adios for now

sun and fun
Hey, I see that someone special had a b.d. in December. So did 'moi' on December 5th. We are separated by centuries but close in spirit..I love tails of adventure and feel every bus ride, every crooked commanchero and smell every flower. We have tons of snow..my husband is sooo happy. He bought a snowblower last year and was not able to use it as there was little snow (Big boys and big toys) My school is just about finished and we have holidays..oh why did our furnace have t kick out just now. We have had no heat..but Robby gave us there handy dandy heaters. That's o.k. downstairs but when we head upstairs we need to take a race and hit the bed. Keep enjoying the colour and such. I really enjoyed the description of the clothing in Nick's latest letter.
Everyone is fine. Morgan is h ome from Loyalist..likes his course, not an engineer like you guys..I think a chemical technician (does that mean he cleans the beakers). Bye for now...Aunt Susan and thanks for the postcard. Now that is what I am talking about for colour, but wouldn't a scarf of that colour look weird on our pale skin.
