Ashleigh used to work at the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum. She said that she learned that there's a phenomenon that happens on small islands where creatures that are usually large on mainlands are smaller on islands. However, insects on small islands are larger than their mainland cousins.

I think she's got it right.

The bugs we've seen here in Japan are ridiculously huge. I don't know why, but they're awfully disgusting.

So I took some pictures to show you. Sometimes I tried to take a picture with my phone, sometimes with my regular camera. That's why the image quality is variable.

Also, I didin't put anything near the bugs a lot of the time for size reference, either I didn't want to put my finger near the thing, or it would have scared it away.

More the former than the latter.
