Arriving in Mostar was an amazing experience. There are still UN forces driving around in their big green tanks, and most buildings are pockmarked by bullet holes. I found it so disturbing that the war seemed so recent - I guess it only ended a decade ago.

But what was immediately more more disturbing, was my incredible bad luck when it came to watching Croatia v Australia in the World Cup.

First, I found myself wandering lost through the Muslim part of the city when the game started at 9pm. I could tell I was in the Muslim quarter, because the cafe umbrellas had mysteriously changed from advertising Karlovacko (beer) to Sarajevenska (water) within just a few blocks.

It was worse than the Pub With No Beer - it was the 16 straight city blocks with No Beer.

Finally got back to the land of Christianity and alcohol at half-time, but do you think I could get a seat at any of the cafes showing the game? I seriously considered pulling rank on the Bosnians, because it was my team playing, but then I thought there might still be some firearms left around from 10 years ago.

Went into one empty cafe and watched five minutes of the Brazil game, but while the team colours are the same, I couldnt get into it.

So it was Aussie Aussie Aussie - Oi Oi Oi! in front of the 2x2cm screen in my lavish hotel room.

Will definitely camp out from lunchtime next game.
