Julie and I decided to depart the bleak weather of Central Europe and take a trip down south to Croatia - land of sun, fun and beaches. But to sum our first day up - it was the crap on the crap.

We should have seen the signs.

We should have known when we got the 7am train from Budapest to Bratislava that things were not going to go well when Julie's chair broke underneath her, sending her, legs akimbo, across the train compartment.

Then our plane from Bratislava to Dubrovnik was delayed for about 40 minutes, which the pilot cheerfully informed us mid-flight was because the plane had sailed through a flock of Norwegian geese on the last trip, and it caused more damage to the plane than they had expected.

We arrived in sunny Dubrovnik, and armed with our hostel booking, we were preparing to be picked up from the bus station by the hostel rep. Turns out there is no hostel, and we were taken to some dude's house where we were put up in a private room.

We should have known when he said his name was Homer Simpson.

This bogan's house was about as far from any sort of attraction you can imagine - we were seriously one block from the wilderness on the outskirts of the city. It took us about an hour to walk to the Old Town, where we arrived parched, and upon ordering a soft drink without looking at the menu, we were charged $7 for the pleasure.

When we decided to walk home that evening, it turns out Homer Simpson's wife has marked the wrong street on the map _ and I genially say to that, HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE, YOU BOGAN!!! We walked around for an hour looking for their shitty little house to spend a fitful night, while their entire extended family came around and held a World Cup party in the room right above ours.

Dubrovnik, City of Dreams, and shitty Scam Artists.
