Where I stayed
at different times since i left home steve, ben and mum all made comments about pictures and taking pictures and up til about 3 days ago i did not believe them. i always thought it was so nice to have stuff captured on your camera to look at afterwards. but they were right, it can really get to the point where people are so so busy taking pictures of things that sometimes they dont actually end up looking at the thing theyre taking pictures of with their real eyes, its all through the viewfinder on the camera. on the ferry from ko lipe to here (ko lanta) i went out on deck cos it was roasting. there was a lady next to me for a bit and we went past a really cool rocky outcroppy thing in the middle of the sea. there was gorgeous crystal blue water around it and the sun was beating down. this woman i think must have taken approximately 57 photos or more of this one rock/island. we didnt know the name, it was in the middle of sea and it looked cool yet for the whole time we were passing it realtively near she was taking pictures and i was thinking whats the point. youll look at that when you get home and wont know what it was cos you never even actually looked at it properly when it was there. so steve, ben, mum you were right.
hmmmm - youd never guess i was on my own would you, the frequency of these blogs has grown exponentially in the last few days!!! life has changed quite alot since ive been on my own. im reading like a lunatic (4 books in the last week), im in bed most nights by 9pm, ive not drank in a week and generally im just really lying very low. (also the diving is SUPER expensive so i have to conserve all my money for that.)
at the moment im on ko lanta which is sort of SW of krabi and near ko phi phi. i arrived here 2 days ago and was actualyl going to stay somewhere else but there were all these touts at the pier and one really nice girl who showed me pics of this place and the rates were brill so i came here to lanta sunny house instead. i have a grand little bungalow with a corrugated iron roof (which proved very sensible, more on that later) and shower etc for just 350 baht / E7.50 a night. its fairly quiet and pretty much on the beach. theres a little restaurant with a telly and loads of DVD's and a little interweb place too. because of the expensive nature of diving im trying really hard to not spend money so most nights i just chill out here and watch a movie or read and like i said im in bed fairly early.
havent been back down to the main town place since i got here, im going to head down tomorrow i think and have a mosey.
yesterday i jsut swam and lounged on the beach all day and cremated my arms in the process (the white bits, not the lower brown bits. you should see me i have like 4-tone tan, REALLY brown lower arms and legs from the diving, brown face, mediocre upper arms but burnt at the back, BURNT upper legs from the beach yesterday )i am an IDIOT) and then the unexposed places are as white as the day i left home. im like a sun collage though not as artistic.
last night i was watching lord of war but then the most unbelievable storm ive ever seen hit and after 60 minutes the lightning was just like literally non-stop and so so bright so we had to turn off the telly and the lights. went back and sat outside my hut and just watched it for ages cos the rain was so heavy you wouldnt sleep cos it was torrential. the thunder and lightning just went on and on and on it was crazy. but boy was i glad i was in a hut with a real roof, id say it was fairly leaky/damp in those bamboo ones.!!
today i went diving around ko phi phi with "dive and relax" (i kid you not, thats their real name). im glad ive decided not to stay there there were jsut so so many tourist boats it was horrendous. but the diving was just class. there was only me and my buddy rob and our instuctor jeremy in our group and on the 3 dives we did in 3 different spots we saw so so much stuff. 2 hawksbill turtles, 3 big (1.5m) blacktip reef sharks, cool cuttlefish (was thinking of you eoghan!!!!), a seahorse, ghost pipe fish, a massive massive moray eel *shudder*, scorpion fish, everything it was amazing. and the visibility was really good so you could see for miles around.
and thats about it really. im planning to stay here a good few more days cos ive ruled out phi phi now and might just head straight to railay or ao nang and then up to phuket. no doubt i will be online again soon to bore you all again with more tales of fish ive seen - ah life is tough.
in other news btw the tibet/china trip is defo looking dodgy right now but the last word from drago is that theyre working on an alternative itinerary that would still finish up in hong kong but possibly go through pakistan instead - how wild would that be?!?! (ah me and my politically unstable areas of travel!!!)
bye for now
me xx
