We are now relaxing in the lounge room of the Penthouse Apartment we have rented in Rome. The location is perfect - again so much to see within walking distance. We have enjoyed another simple meal on the Terrace which overlooks, believe it or not, a view of the Colosseum, St Peter's Church, parks and a majestic aerial view of surrounding landscape. Sis and I found the local Supermarket and purchased what we need for dinner and breakfast. There are parks all round, and we are within walking distance of the Colosseum, which I will be visiting tomorrow; Sis may join me or may elect to stay home for the day.

Mum will be having a rest day and she is really looking forward to simply enjoying the wonderful ambience of the apartment. We have been very lucky in this choice. The apartment is not only located perfectly for sightseeing, but is beautifully appointed, has a well-equipped kitchen for self-catering and we have the private use of the top floor terrace, with bedroom doors opening onto the terrace. We are also enjoying having all windows and doors open; the breeze is wonderful and the traffic noise is quite muted - certainly much quieter than Venice.

We're now off an another adventure - discovering Rome. We will be using the Hop On-Hop Off Bus for Mum to get her bearings in Rome, but she is also considering walking to the Colosseum - an achievable goal.

We left Venice without incident. We organised a water taxi at a cost of 60 Euros, but it was a lovely way to finish off our visit to Venice. The station at Venice is so much better appointed than the Florence Station. There are seats for resting and a wonderful choice of food which was just as well, as the train didn't offer much by way of refreshments. There's also a really beautiful Church near the Railway Station, so I took the opportunity to visit the Church whilst waiting for the train.

I've decided not to bother with 1st class rail travel in the future. Once the platform has been announced, you have to make a mad dash for your carriage to try and get your luggage into the limited spots available. All the trains we have travelled on have been poorly set up for large, heavy suitcases. There's plenty of overhead space for carry-on type of luggage, but it's much too difficult to find space for heavy luggage. Ridiculous arrangement. And to top it off, the 1st class carriages are at the very end of the platform, which means a long walk dragging the luggage.

We left the apartment in Venice around 9.30 am and arrived in Rome around 5 pm; you can lose a lot of time travelling, but at least you do get to see varied landscapes. Well, there's not much more to write today. Tomorrow will offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the local area and I plan on walking to the Colosseum - what an opportunity.

Mum is beyond happy - she is thoroughly enjoying her trip and is over-joyed at being here, in this apartment, in Rome to celebrate her 85th birthday on October 3rd. How wonderful for her to realise her dream of visiting Rome.

Till next time - buonanotte.
