Chinese Scroll print. The image is printed on silk with a paper backing. It's about 15 feet long, the image itself is about 12" wide. It depicts an emperor's (or other high official who was allowed to ride in the carrier) procession with ships, landscape, and village scenes . There are many scenes of retail activity - food, merchandise, livestock and lodging. Too bad the scenes were sanitized to exclude any illegal, immoral, unflattering, or even recreational images. Not like Breugel or Canaletto with dogs peeing, nothing like that.
These must have been popular at one time, as they show up at all the antique markets. Some vendors specialize in these, with hundreds to choose from. This one is printed, sells for a few dollars. The serious ones are painted or etched with ink and can sell for 6 figures. I'm guessing that this one is not later than the 1930's or so, represents a scene from the 18th or 19th century judging from the ships, bridge and buildings. I've seen one other identical to this one without looking too hard, so there must be plenty of copies in circulation.
