Wo Chi Su, it means i am a vegetarian. I haven't used it yet here because it doesn't really translate. It really means i don't eat pork and beef but i eat everything else, which just isn't the case! I've tried to get by just pointing to things listed i the lonely planet (a.k.a bible) that fall under the vegetarian food section.
Today for breakfast/Lunch i order what translated to sweet onion pancakes. I imagined some kind of mushed/fried potato with onion. It was more like crepes with onion and lots of ham. Well when people can speak English i almost never send things back and i was not about to convey the fact that i had ordered something i don't eat. So, i went about picking at the crepes to eat the sections which were generally ham-free. And I'm sure you understand this is a huge step in my life! Well our server was not happy with the way i was eating the 'congyou bing' so she brought us spoons. So i used the spoon to cut away the ham. made sense to me. Then she came over and gave us a lesson on how to eat with chopsticks. This was all in good measure she was trying to help! so i thought it best at this point to explain to her i was a vegetarian - wo chi su. Well then she understood. So i went about my picking and there seemed to be some commotion between her and the cook/manager but we just ignored it.
This meal resulted in my server bringing me a new crepe with no ham and when i said thank you as many times as i could her skipping back to her boss with a huge smile and thumbs up. This is China! this is how i will remember China because even with all the smog most people are very very kind and really want to help the western freaks with their strange eating habits.
