Didn't set an alarm - slept for 12 hours!! Got up and showered and set out to find Fisherman's Wharf. Took me about a 50 minute walk, on which I saw a fair bit of poverty - homeless people etc One man told me of for stepping on his piece of carpet! Also saw lots of steep hills and Victorian looking buildings. I initially went the wrong way when I reached the sea which turned out well as I got my first sighting of the bridge! It's really something, even from far away. Also saw the island of Alcatraz, looking forward to going there on Thursday.

Found my way to Fisherman's Wharf, it's quite a big area - busy with people, shops, restaurants, trams and piers. I headed to Pier 39 where there are huge seals lazily sunbathing. The lovely Jessica Mitchell had told me to try chowder served in a bread bowl, I found a cafe and ordered just that. Literally a huge bread roll with the middle scooped out and chowder inside. So as you eat it, the soup soaks through, so nice. My view included the bridge, Alcatraz, the seals and the city skyline. Awesome.

Decided to jump on a bus to see the main sights and to get my bearings. Saw the entire city pretty much - even went over the bridge! Learnt some history along the way. Interesting place, especially hearing about the impact of the 89 earthquake and how they rebuilt everything.

Got dropped back at Union Square and had a wander round. Lots of shops like back home - I even found Urban Outfitters! Managed to look around without buying anything, I hope you're all as proud as I am.. Went into Westfield and witnessed a full on criminal chase - 2 boys ran past me and 2 seconds later a woman screaming 'stop those boys!' Loads of other people joined in with the shouting to people on the floors below, unsure if they caught them finally..

Walked back along the bustling streets to the hostel and had some dinner. There's a huge kitchen facility here so has been nice to cook for myself for a change. Been looking into what else I can do in my week, have some ideas. Pretty beaten from my flights still, heading to sleep. My bus ticket is valid until 4pm tomorrow so off to explore things more fully..
