This morning we had breakfast on the hotel's roof terrace, overlooking Lake Pichola which we were able to see for the first time in daylight as we arrived after dark last night. As we only had the day to explore Udaipur, we decided to take a boat cruise round the lake to see what we could see, visit the City Palace and have a general wander round.

We bought boat tickets at the entry to the palace and they told us the next boat was in 15 minutes, so plenty of time, or so we thought... turns out the boat jetty was at the other end of the palace and.. it was the longest palace in the world! Anyway we just about made it onto the boat and donned the mandatory life jackets (is this really India) for the chug round the lake.

The boat cruises give you a great view of the city, looking back from the lake side and our boat also stopped off for 20 minutes at Jag Mandir island which gave us another photo opportunity, as nice as the place was though, we decided on the 80Rpe water!

Back on board and we did the trip back to the jetty, we had a walk round the outside of the City Palace but decided to give the inside a miss on the basis that we were properly palace and forted out by now after two weeks in India! We grabbed a coffee and pastry and then headed off for a tour of the backstreets, a part of India that I've really enjoyed. We set out in search of the other big lake in town, quite nice but a poor relation to Lake Pichola which gets all the attention.

After a quick spot of lunch we decided to head back to the hotel rooftop terrace and basically, take it easy for a while, grab a beer and enjoy the view over the city for the afternoon, probably for the first time during our trip. It really is a fab place to watch the world go by and enjoy the beautiful sunset Unfortunately though I did miss the sun go down as I decided that I needed to do a bit of pressie shopping in case we didn't have the chance during the rest of our trip.

Unlike lots of other parts of India we've visited, shopping in Udaipur is quite a nice experience, the shops are more like those we're used to and the shopkeepers don't hassle you as soon as you get within 30 yards, meaning for me anyway that I'm more likely to go in and actually buy something. So a couple of pressies, plus silk painting and lucky Ganesh elephant later and I was back at the hotel.

A lot of the rooftop terraces restaurants in town advertise evening showings of Octopussy and despite only seeing it a few weeks earlier, I quite liked the idea of seeing it over here. 30 minutes later and I'd changed my mind a bit, we trecked all the way up loads of stairs to the 'highest restaurant in town' only to find the TV on the floor in the corner. So we tried next door and theirs wasn't even on. Perhaps the ads were still there from the 80s! Anyway we passed on the idea and went somewhere instead for a nice meal to finish off our visit to a really great city.

Next stop tomorrow and flights to southern India...
