Despite having already stayed in two cities since our Patagonian adventure it was Buenos Aires that made us really want to escape back to the wilds; a gut reaction to the overwhelming size of the city, the confining streets, imposing buildings, the volume of traffic, people and noise, and the cold, wet grayness, and to the increasing realisation that our extraordinary trip would end abruptly in a few days time. The latter induced a strange blend of emotions from contentment and joy through to real anxiety and sorrow. We couldn't wait to see our family and friends but we knew we were going to deeply miss spending our days together.

But, as the weather cheered up so did we and we came to really enjoy Buenos Aires. Our first few days were spent adapting to the hustle and bustle and then we started to get a feel for the different districts with their distinct characters. We knew we couldn't see it all so we focused most of our attention on historic San Telmo, lively Centro, exclusive Palermo and smart Recoleta, navigating mainly on foot with the odd metro and bus experience thrown in. The chicos behind the desk in our hostel knew BA intimately and were fantastically helpful. We soon got our bearings, finding some great restaurants and bars and the all important supermarket and launderette. We hunted out some quality souvenirs from amongst the awful tourist tat, browsed bookshops in Palermo, wandered some fabulous street markets, had some delicious meals, watched live Tango in Plaza Dorrego with a bottle of wine, wandered the river admiring the beautiful ships, and visited sights like the giant silver Floralis Generica in United Nations Square.

It was a busy and fun few days, and before we’d had too much time to dwell on the inevitable we were boarding the plane that would take us home.
