After leaving Puerto Lopez (after our 1 dollar chicken and chips from the street stall, a weird guy whispering in my ear "Hola Preciosa" and a boy with down syndrone giving Al and I a hug and a kiss), we arrived in Quito 3 hours early... at 5am! The driver was a maniac, hence the 3 hour early arrival... we didnt want to stay in Quito, we planned to book a jungle tour and then get a bus out of there... but at 5am, in a big city where nothing is open, we had little choice. WE got a taxi to the main street and got a cheap, windowless cell for quite cheap. We slept for a couple of hours and then went to find somewhere to book our jungle tour. Well, Quito was dead...completely - we went for a wander through the old town to see if anything was open there, apart from fried chicken joints and churches, nothing was open. We found a cafe and had a very expensive snack and then wandered back looking at some of the sites the book suggested to see... past an art market, and then we found one tour place open - the guy said it wasnt meant to be open as it is the day of the dead and its a bank holiday here for 3 days! but we were lucky as he was in town working on his book, so had opened the office... anyway, the prices were extortionate - WAY over budget, with a minimum of 5 days, so we had a stress, tried to decide what to do and made a plan B so we didnt blow the budget completely! Phoned Dad, which made me smile (after what had so far not been a good day!)

WE found the only option for dinner near our hostal (KFC) and then decided we didnt want to go back to our windowless cell... so went to the cinema. What a welcome break... we bought some popcorn and a giant pepsi and al dragged me to see an appropriate film for our day - "Drag me to hell" - a horror, in English with spanish subtitles... it was funny...a but jumpy, but funny!

We got up bright and early (in the dark as we had no windows!) and headed to the bus station - we declined taxis as we thought it wasnt far but when we realised it was getting too hot and it was uphill, we got a taxi - only to find out the lonely planet was out of date again and the bus terminal we were walking to doesnt exist anymore, the big grand new one is way out of town (in the opposite direction!!!)

Oh well, quitting quito to look for some jungle town...
