Having got the bus from Ica to Pisco... we got off at the crossroads of the panamerica highway... and were bombarded by taxi`s being the only gringos getting off the bus... we finally got one who would take us to Pisco... although he seemed surprised we wanted to go... he had most of his teeth missing but he had a trustworthy grin! We had kept saying that we wanted to have a pisco sour in pisco... so planned to have breakfast, get some cash out and then head on to paracas for the night ... anyway, we arrived in pisco, and it was not atall as the guide book had described... the taxi driver explained that they were re building everything. I felt a bit silly that I didnt know why... and didnt really want to ask. Al and I came to the conclusion that there had been some kind of disaster since the guide book had been written, probably an earthquake looking at the mess of the place... literlly, there were piles of rubble everywhere... the only built places were the bank, the monument in the square and the schools... we got some cash and got a taxi straight out of there.. sadly. I checked on the internet later, and there was an earthquake in 2007which is why it is like it is... sometimesI wish guide books were moreup to dat, its hard to research everywhere you go in more than one place... but I really would have liked to have known what had happened....before I turned up! - we had our pisco sour in paracas, which is pretty much newly built... also since the quake... but I guess they feel that its worth rebuilding to get the tourists into paracas and the ballestas islands... and its orking, as there were plenty of local tourists as well as a few tour groups...
