Where I stayed
Cruz del Sur overnight bus
I slept okay, and woke up to Al pointing out the sea (we were basically driving on the beach, sand one side... sea on the other ....he was like an excited kid on christmas morning...)
We arrived in Nazca... and went across the road to an agency Al had read about, and booked our flight over the Nazca lines... as Al said, whats the point in coming to Nazca if I am too scared to fly over the lines, and see them for ourselves... so we went for it...
less that an hour later, we were waiting in the tiny airport...watching the tiny planes take off and land (and a national geographic film about the area=... and then it was our turn...- we were with a French couple, we had a conversation about not having eaten breakfast because of the liklihood of it returning (as I had heard many stories of people not feeling well on the flights!=) - we walked across the runway... until we reached the smallest plane... Al and the French girl had to get in the back, and me and the French guy in the middle ... the pilot and a finnish girl got in the front... very cosy indeed!
Well, it was scary but pretty amazing... the pilot pointed out all sorts of different lines and then flew sideways over them one way, and then the other way, so we all had a good view... after the first turn, the Frenchguy grabbed teh sick bag... and ... I looked out of my window to avoid seeing the contents of his stomach!... we went over about 15 different shapes, monkey, dog, hands, tree... birds... all sorts, some much clearer than others... and apart from that, there are so many other lines you can make out... they are bizarre. The french guy spent the rest of the 30 min flight with his eyes closed, sweating profusely and vomiting occasionally! - it did make me nauseous, and had I eaten anything, I would have puked too... but there was nothing there so I was lucky!
There are so many different theories about the Nazca lines, it is hard to make a judgement on them, but they are spectacular... and I am really glad we floew over them!
Next stop - deadpeople in the open cemetaryin Chauchilla... (well, after breakfast!!!)
We looked at tours, they were all over priced and included extr things we didnt want to see... so nearly gave up, like on poor Juanita... but I decided to ask a taxi... he seemed nice and the price was okay, so we got him to drive us the 25 mins out there... what a weird place!
I will put pictures up, but they are pretty weird... they are basically open graves with a mixture of mummies, some still wth hair and skin... skulls, bones... some just placed in lines, some still sitting upright... a little morbid but interesting... we wandered around for half an hour... took some pictures, and wished them peace.... and headed back to Nazca... to complete our crazy day... got the bus to Ica, and then a taxi on to Huachina... arriving in our little sand dune haven for a relaxing day or 2.... or will it be...???
