22nd - 23rd September 2011

Our first manouvre in Australia; a relatively swift 6 hour overnight Bus and Ferry trip to Magnetic Island. As you can see, we've moved about a millimetre down Australia's coast on any map. Wonderful.

In great need of a little R&R after Cairns, we managed to check in at 8am and pretty much lie on the beach all morning. Nelly Bay (possibly the most homoerotically named bay in all of Australia) was completely deserted, a full kilometre of sandy space for us to waste napping. There's only so much napping two grown men can do however, so the afternoon consisted of us attempting to rock climb our way round to the next bay. We failed.

We managed to abstain from both peer pressure and the drink on the first night, crashing at a reasonable hour.

Onto the second day! Disappointed to have seen so few animals that could potentially eat/maim/kill us, we headed off to explore Maggie herself. Having second thoughts on the deadly animals front we instead decided to find wild Wallabies and Koala Bears, which with our track record was probably a much safer option for everyone.

As the pictures show we were pretty damn succesful! Regular Steve Irwin's. Wallabies were easy being pretty much confined to a small straggle of rocks at Arcadia. The Koala was, to be honest, also pretty easy after it was pointed out to us by a German couple. Walking up to the World War II forts on the top of Radical Bay to find it was an adventure in itself however, and Nick once again lived up to his nickname of Nick "The Calamity" Whitworth by breaking his hobbit foot open on rocks. Twice.

Then onto Horseshoe Bay for a pretty amazing sunset and some cheese muffins. Don't say we don't eat like kings.

Peer pressure bowed the following night as beer pong was broken out, a good ending to our brief stint on Maggie! Next up, Airlie Beach..
