We checked into our hotel for the next couple of days which was lovely. Luckily, we come back to this hotel after the trail and there will be a nice hot bath with my name on it!

Cusco is a nice city with tons of character. The narrow cobbled streets and beautiful architecture of the churches and buildings was built by the Incas. Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire (1200s-1532). Many believe that the city was planned to be shaped like a puma. The Spanish tried to destroy a lot of it but the foundations of the buildings were just too strong to destroy. The Spanish undertook the construction of a new city on the foundations of the old Inca city, replacing temples with churches and palaces with mansions for the conquerors.

We had reduced a little in altitude now being at 3,300m but it was still hard to breathe at times. So taking it easy before our trek, we did a little shopping for snacks and supplies and bought some thermals for the cold, cold nights to come. We explored the city a little, had our briefing of the trail and the hardships that were to come, and received our walking poles and sleeping bags. There are other Inca ruin sites near and around Cusco but as we were to be visiting a lot of these over the next few days we decided to take it easy.

Tomorrow, we leave for a tour of the Sacred valley where we stay in the town of Ollantaytambo and meet at the starting point of the Inca Trail. I am VERY EXCITED (and very nervous!)...
