In Leiden, in the upper part of the lowlands, students sat in there houses on a saturday night. An palpable calm controlled the streets of the small student town that night as clutches of student prepared for their pilgrimage to Amsterdam the upcoming Monday. It was for Koninginndag or Queen's day an epic explosion of sex, drugs, and her Majesty. Tall blonde haired, blue eyed locals spend the whole day swagged out in Orange drinking, dancing, and taking drugs. The preferred music of choice in Holland is House, and they have lots of it. My fondest memory of the day was a house concert Laura and myself went to on the outskirts of the city around 3 o'clock. To the passing eye it was nothing more than another stage concert with people dancing and enjoying music in the crowd, but after sitting down to rest for only a brief 20 minutes the folly revealed itself. Perched atop the vestiges of an old well we sat in between two very different crowds. To our right, hundreds of young students raged hard to deep variable bass beats of dubstep. Some participated in large violent mosh pit's while others participated in various sexual acts ranging from light, in the pants hand jobs, to more overt fellatio. In-between the two crowds to our backs rested the tacitly designated "drug bush". Young scores of 2-4 people quickly moved in and out through various fabricated entrance/exit points. Nobody even bothered to check if anyone was watching as they consumed a wide range of illicit substances that required consummation through the nose or lungs. Then to our left a large group of grass sitters had set up alcohol picnic's and listen to the music. Here large amounts of ecstasy and shrooms were passed around from person to person, and for 3 euro you could purchase a hit of "laugh gaz" a whip it distributed by various vendors.

Of course, the holiday is to primarily celebrate Dutch history and culture. Koninginndag falls around the same time that the flowers bloom in Holland's country side. Keukenhof, Lisse is the main public garden where visitor's may view a magnificent floral display. I recommend to go very early or very late as the event attracts clusters of tourist from around the world.
