The rough guide describes Bandera as having the look and feel of an old Western movie set and is named the cowboy capital of Texas and in true Texas state of mind tradition; we didn't rock up in Bandera unprepared. The must do things in Bandera are 1) stay on a dude ranch, 2) drink beer and dance in one of the many saloons, 3) Learn to two step. I'm happy to report we managed all three.

We spent 3 days at Dixie Dude ranch a great place east of Bandera where you are fed home cooked Texan meals 3 times a day, go riding - western style - twice a day and spend your spare time, relaxing, swimming, hiking or practicing your roping skills.

I think it is fair to say that neither Chris, his family nor I could be called horsemen or women but we defiantly gave it a go, we defiantly looked the part and we defiantly had fun despite the rain. And oh my god did it rain. It hasn't rained in this part of the Hill country for 2 years but we sat on the front porch and watched one of the most amazing lightening storms I've see for a while and our screams could probably be heard for miles around when a lighting fork struck close to our house.

Despite all of these great activities, this stay will be remembered for our rain-off marathon game of Texasopoly. played over 3 days we clocked up about 12 hours of playing time, it came some to a close game between Col and Macca at the end and Col (the Mexican) came out on top.

We also learnt to dance and then went out to one of the local saloons for steak night where you can take your own steak for the enormous BBQ's. This is the first time I've ever witnessed what can only be called 'steak envy’. We went up with our steaks, thinking they looked great and really looking forward to eating them and then up comes a local with the biggest steaks I’ve ever seen and slaps them down next to ours and gives us a 'this is how we do steaks in Texas’ grin!
