So it had to happen sooner or later, no Texas BBQ wannabe can call himself a wannabe without a pilgrimage to the BBQ capital of the World. So as part of our trip to the Hill country to see the wildflowers (see next blog) we included a pilgrimage to Lockhart.

Firstly, we need to introduce our new car  'Albert' . Albert is named after the town of Albert (currently popn 4) which is nothing more than a tavern (in a style area locals call an icehouse) on the site of the town's former general store and a dance hall. Really cute pub and worth a stop for a friendly local beer. We stopped here as part of this trip and decided that in honour of this place and the fact that it is facing a halving in its population due to a difficult divorce, that we would call our new car 'Albert'.

Back to Lockhart - the facts..... in 1999 the Texas state legislature names Lockhart the BBQ capital of Texas and therefore the World. There are four BBQ restaurants in Lockhart. The restaurants estimate that about 5,000 people visit their establishments each week. This would be roughly 250,000 people a year who eat BBQ in Lockhart.
The most famous one and the one we went to is Blacks BBQ http://www.blacksbbq.com/

Located at 215 N. Main Street is internationally known and was established in 1932. It is one of the oldest barbecue restaurants in Texas that has been continuously owned and operated by the same family. (Blacksbbq.com) Black's has been recognized in various publications such as the New York Times and Texas Monthly magazine. The May, 1997 issue of Texas Monthly selected Black's BBQ as one of Texas' fifty best barbecue restaurants. During President Lyndon Johnson's term in the 1960's, the President asked Black's BBQ to provide barbecue sausage to be served on the grounds of the U.S. Capital in front of the Smithsonian Institute. With Secret Service and Department of the Agriculture personnel supervising the operations, the sausage was prepared and flown directly to Washington, D.C. for this Presidential affair

Verdict - Very good BBQ - rib rub  was so great we invested in some to take away.
