Arrived in Merida safe and sound, went and grabbed a bite to eat, as a 10 hour bus ride can really take it out of you, had a quick drink and went to bed.
Day 15 - Progresso
So we woke up and had planned a day at the beach, as Merida is only a 45 minute drive away from the coast and we hadnīt seen the beach since arriving in Mexico. So we jumped on a local bus all by ourselves, even getting the opportunity to practice our spanish, and headed to Progresso.
We should mention that on this day we had a choice of doing one of four things. Going to watch a bull fight, walking around Merida, going to the cenotes (underground water hole) or going to the beach.
For the whole bus ride to Progresso it was pouring rain and then when we finally arrived to the little shanty town in appeared that everyone was trying to leave Progresso and that maybe we should stay on the bus and head back to Merida. However as we had made the beach our choice for the day we thought it best to at least give it at go. So off we headed down the street to the beach and had it of been a nice day it maybe would of been a beautiful beach, however with gale force wind we decided that maybe we should head back to Merida as there wasnīt much else to offer and lined up to 30 minutes with everyone else who was trying to escape Progresso as well.
Merida also didnīt have alot to offer, although Alex the Californian seemed to take a fancy with the Local Pub, having put 300 pesos over the bar and drinking by himself till the early hours of the morning.
Day 16 - Chitzen Itza
Today we went to see the Mayan Ruins of Chitzen Itza, otherwise known as Chicken Pizza to alot of Americans as our Tour Guide informed us.
We were amazed at the size and intelligence of the Mayan people with the pyramids dating back to early AC. We were given a tour of the place and then were free to have a look around, with both of us taking advantage of the local crafts for sale.
We then jumped back on the bus and headed to Playa Del Carmen which is a beach side town 45 minutes below Cancun. Went out for dinner and a few drinks then went to bed.
Day 17 - Playa Del Carmen
Well today we woke up and made an executive descision to go and bake ourselves in the sun and do some shopping, what every holiday should involve. The beaches in Playa are absolutely amazing as you can see from some of our photos and the water luke warm.
That night, being our last night on tour together, we all went to a chinese noodle bar and ate dinner together, with all the oldies eating and running as soon as they could. The rest of us kicked on starting at an R & B club, which we soon left. We then walked around eventually finding a club that played house music, only to discover after ordering our drinks that this was a gay bar. We finished our drinks and went to the giant bar/club on the beach and continued to party there until close and then went and grabbed some greasy pizza slices, which were the siza of our heads and went home.
Day 18 - Playa Del Carmen
What started out as a simple day of sun baking soon turned into one of the weirdest days of both our lives. We decided to go snorkelling, so off we headed, however we probably shouldnīt of been in the water as massive waves were crashing down on our heads making Nicole freak out and not be able to participate. So Kez and Laura continued snorkelling for another half an hour but soon had to finish up as it became to dangerous.
Then as we are heading into the beach, some crazy woman had clearly escaped the mental institution as she was swimming around naked looking for a person who didnīt exist in the water. We finally were able to get her into our boat and back to shore where the life guards then took care of her.
That sort of put a fizzle on our last night in Playa and after dinner we all went to bed.
Day 19 - Leaving Playa Del Carmen for Lima
Today we caught a flight from Cancun to Lima via Miama.
Nothing to exciting happened this day.
