I awake as we touch down in Melbourne Tullamarine at just before midday. I’ve been looking forward to getting some sun for so long, especially after China’s rapid descent into single-figure temperatures in the last week. No such luck. Melbourne is 18degrees and raining! Ha. Nevermind.
I get my bags and a shuttle to the hotel. I booked it as it was cheap and easily accessible from town and the airport, I hadn’t expected it to be nice! The facia of the hotel looked really small from the street, but as I checked in and passed reception, the door opened out into a
courtyard of apartments! Spiral staircases and draping greenery all around. It was a tropical paradise. I get myself sorted and text my friends to meet up later for drinks. I have some work to do tomorrow so must behave tonight. My follow on flight isn’t until 6pm, so I can play a bit!
The room isn’t flash, but comfortable enough. I get myself sorted and make to head out to do some touristy stuff. Funnily enough I planned my research trip for work down to a T, but forgot to plan in some things for me! So I’m going to wing it. Reception gave me a useful little map of the city. Just as I go to head out, the heavens open and the tropical paradise turns into a tropical monsoon! I get out eventually for a walk along Yarra river to witness the amazing architecture of Melbourne.
It’s such a shame that the weather is so poor, but it does make the skyline just that little bit more moody! The park walk past Yarra is really pretty, with some really interesting
sculptures… and, Seagulls! Man I haven’t seen a seagull for forever! I get to a shopping mall and find the food court, so, much choice! Nando’s ins hands down though. Chicken with mild spice sauce and chips… oh god this is heaven!
I have to get to St.Kilda to meet my friends Mark and Rowan. They’re street isn’t even on my map though! I walk on past the national art gallery and give up to the safety of a cab. The driver is actually from Shenzhen so we have a good chat en route! I meet the boys in an Irish
bar below their hostel. It’s so great to see them both. Probably 7 years since sixth form I spoke to them properly, but as with all good people -it was easy to pick up and have a good yarn again! Rowan’s been travelling through Asia for 6weeks and Mark has been working in Aus for 6months. How funny, three people from Denbigh meeting in Australia. This is why facebook is amazing!
We went from the Irish bar where I was told, in the thickest Irish accent, “You have nice teeet”… I think he meant teeth??, on into St.Kilda to a bar with Pacman as the drinks table. We inevitably spent many dollars on our table. We then went on to a club, and I bailed before it all got too messy… or so I thought.
