Set around a laguna, Huacachina is an oasis with absolutely massive sand dunes as a backdrop that some guy had the class idea of strapping a plank of wood to his feet and going down them, very similar to snowboarding.
I stayed at Casa de Arena Hostel where they also take you on a dune buggy to go tearing around the dunes, drop you off, you hurl yourself down a dune, then they pick you up at the bottom to take you to the next dune. This is advisable as itīs a real struggle to walk up big piles of sand, particularly when youīve indulged in the "All you can eat and drink" BBQ the night before. "All You Can Eat", thatīs not an invitation to me, I see it as some sort of challenge and throw in free jugs of Cuba Libre and Iīm even happier.
Huacachina is home to the most punctual dogs in the world. Every night at 7.30 there would be about 10 of them turning up for the BBQ and these things weren't shy about jumping up on tables to steal your food.
It's 4 mile away from the city of Ica, where I stayed the previous night. There's not a great deal to do there except go the really good museum, or if you're one person, go to the museum and steal a couple of Inca cloths.
