Where I stayed
Stayed at a great campground with two pools, etc.
What I did
Toured around Virgina Beach
We left the Skyline Drive, Luray caverns area and headed east to Richmond, Va where we visited a civil war battle area called the Sunken Road, saw exhibits on the seige of Richmond and saw where the bullet holes have peirced the outside of several buildings, and visited and toured a restored civil war era tavern/ hotel to hear about their lives during that time. Continued east to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. It was nice to put my toes into the Atlantic Ocean, walk along the boardwalk, shake the soft sand out of my sneakers. We hadnt eaten much of anything so far that day, so about 3pm, we found a seafood all-you-can-eat buffet place and filled , or rather overfilled with crabcakes, shrimp, scallops and flounder. Ate too much and had to call it a day after that - couldnt move too well. Thankfully our campground was not too far away and we crashed for the rest of he afternoon. Temps got cool in the evening so extra blankets were in order, but during the day the temps are in the 80's and very pleasant.
Today, 6/4/11, we left Chesapeake, Va crossed into North Carolina and headed toward the Outer Banks. We stopped at Kitty Hawk, NC to see the Wright Brothers exhibit, Nags Head beaches, and finally down to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Very interesting and no, I did not climb to the top of the lighthouse which would be equal to climbing a 26 story building.
Heading out down the OBX, we took two ferries in Pamilican Sound, before ending up in Morehead , NC.
From here we will be heading west to Raleigh and into Greensboro, NC to get some minoe service on the RV and for Fran to visit a friend in Ashville, NC. More on that section of the trip next blog.
