We spent the last weeks of our vacation on Rab, the cutest, beautiful little island in Kvarner bay. Town of Rab experienced its greatest development during the reign of Romans in the 1st century BC. Today’s town appearance, many monuments and the remains of the fortresses are witnesses to the town’s long history. There are four bell towers, many palaces of the rich Rab families and one of the most beautiful parks in the Mediterranean “Komrcar”. Rab is picturesque Mediterranean town rich in historical monuments and attracted the first tourist at the end of 19th century, and never stopped!
Our stay there started with Rab Fashionweek, which was held on the town’s old Roman stairs and it was great - not your regular fashion show. The models had to be barefoot as those stairs are very old stone stairs and the whole ambiance was really cool. There were many different Croatian designers and some of the items were available for sale for few days after the show.
The weather was great the first week and we enjoyed our evening strolls down to the walkway by the marina and Noland loved looking at all the yachts parked there.
We were able to get together with my cousin and her family that lives in Germany and we see each other once every year or two, and we were able to go with them on their boat to some nice swimming coves and our girls were trilled to spend time with my cousin’s girls - their favorites!
The view of the town Rab from the boat is great, I always like seeing it from a different angle. Got a great picture with a water splashing and Rab town in the background - my camera had to get wet a little bit, but survived the bath!
Every Thursday since 1986, during the summer months, you can attend Rab Music Evenings - we’ve seen Teresa Kaban on a piano and Henryk Blazej on a flute, both from Poland and the following week we’ve seen a Croatian pianist Vitomir Ivanjek ( www.vito.hr ) who was absolutely amazing!
And then, The Fiera! Fiera is medieval summer festival which celebrates St.Kristopher - Rab’s protector, and Rab’s tradition - you can see the lepers, people dressed in historical outfits, rich and poor, old trades and the way people lived and worked for centuries - fishermen and farmers, musicians and pharmacists, but the best of all, the Fiera brings the people together! I’ve listen to them sing Rab and Dalmatia songs in Loggia until about 4am J People from San Marino always come dressed in their traditional outfits to celebrate Rab, as St.Marin who was born on Rab “created” San Marino!
But, the best of all for me was two BBQ’s we had in Kampor, on my mom’s family land with her, her brother, his wife, their daughter (my cousin J ) and her family! It was great to be where my grandparents started it all! As we call it - BBQ @ the Ranch!
Now, time to pack the suitcase and go back to real life! Hope to come back soon and I hope that somebody reading this blog decided to come and visit this beautiful country called Croatia!
