We caught the afternoon ferry to Stavanger...about 4 hours through lots of different landscapes. There were many bridges joining islands, lovely wooden houses on lonely shorelines, beautiful harbour towns with colourful old wooden buildings next to ultramodern apartments. We were met by the owner of our B & B which was a relief at the end of the journey.
Stavanger is a harbour town on the west coast of Norway. It is the centre of the oil industry in the North Sea and also a big fishing industry which in times past had employed nearly half the town. It is built on a hill so there are lots of steps but it is very compact.
The oil museum was fascinating and I can't believe I am saying that but it was. The other museum we thought was fantastic was the canning museum where we learnt all there is to know about canning sardines. They must have school groups through as there were lots of plastic sardines, with or without heads that you could practice putting into tins etc.
We spent a lot of time just wandering around the old town and the lake and a long overdue visit to a laundromat. We flew from Stavanger via Oslo to Tromso last night and have arrived to snowfalls. I don't think we have much chance of seeing the northern lights as we are probably 2 weeks too late. We are enjoying the snow though and have toddled around on buses today looking at the town. The Hurti Gruten came into port this morning and we were wondering whether we would run into our friend from the Bergen train. We visited the Arctic Carhedral today which was lovely. We had a few minutes of quiet and then 3 tour buses arrived. Tomorrow we are going dog sledding as the reindeer are moving to their next pastures!! John tried to organise some snow shoing but couldn't get onto the company. We are in between seasons with some things finishing and others not started.
We are staying at the Ami hotel..a bit hostel like but very comfortable and a chance to cook for ourselves. Looking forward to that.
