9.30am and our guide Vung walks through hotel entrance raincoats in hand so we assume that our firt treck is about to begin but first the niceties of a apology from Mr Tom, the direcror of trails of mountains, for the hic up at Lao Cai station and Mr Tom wishes to reimberse for the cost, We thank him and decline the offer just to be safely in Sapa is enough.
Now it is time to attack the treck to Cat Cat village. There is misty rain falling as we start to decend the first steps to Cat Cat vilage. A little bit of assistance for Gwen as the steps are quite steep and slipery..
The valley vistas are quite brearh taking with pockets of mist drifting through the valley
The first stop is a replica Black Hamong dwelling that shows the difficult living conditions.
We accept a cup of green tea and Vung gives a demonstration of operating the hand operated grinding mill. Life would certainly be difficult under these conditions.
We decend to the valley floor to view the old French Hydro Station and the Cat Cat falls they are quite impressive..
We commence the steep climb out of the valley thankfully we do not have to climb far, about 1km, and we are met by our transport.
Back at the hotel our room is ready so there is time to freshen up before going to Mr Tom's resturant for lunch (at Mr Tom's insistance ) the meal was exelent and free beer as well.
Back at the hotel we have time to take in the views. Mount Fannispan in the distance and a small lake below the hotel.
Vung meets us at about 4.30 pm and we go for a stroll around the town to take in a little of the local culture. We find the locals to be quite friendly and our guide managers to keep most hawkers away. We walk past a whole pig on a spit on the footpath gust starting to be roasted for the evening meal. After a walk around the lake back to the hotel in time to shower an down to the guest lounge for a pre dinner drink. it certainly feels strange to be sitting in front of an open fire in summer. Dinner is five star but expensive .
Finally bed after a long day our first day in Sapa apart from Lao Cai could not have been a better representation of life in Sapa.
