From there on to Lourdes (the religious place not the cricket ground (that's in England) I am not even going to get into the whole religious thing here. But the crass commercialism that goes with it is worth a mention. Dozens of stores selling among other things glow in the dark Virgin Marys with flashing multi-coloured halos. My favorite was your own personal guardian angel. This was a plastic angel about 6 inches high on a one meter string which was attached to a meter high stick. The idea being that you swing it around your head. Your own personal guardian flying angel. My thought was that if you didn’t hold it high enough it would give you a personal black eye.
Lourdes itself was an interesting place in the Pyrenees Mountains and a good stop over place for our trip into the mountains.
This trip involved getting a rack railway up into the mountains. Unfortunately it was misty and raining and we couldn't’t see much once we got to the top (should have bought one of those angels). Notwithstanding the cloud in the higher reaches, the actual train ride was exciting. The views were spectacular and the gradient of the railway has to be seen to be really appreciated. At the top of this mountain you can stand with one foot in France and the other in Spain
We also visited a old roman aqueduct which you could walk out onto.
Astop along the way was also made at a local winery.
